I wanted to share with you a very tragic story and the heart-warming actions of an extraordinary company.
Two years ago we sold a Bernina to a woman from Mammoth, Ca. This was Pam’s “dream machine”; the sewing machine she had waited a lifetime for. Her children were growing-up and she looked forward to having more time to learn to quilt and sew. She had joined a friendship group in her area and enjoyed sharing her projects with her friends and family. On the way to Bakersfield to take her Bernina guide class, Pam, her husband and young son were hit head-on by a drunk driver and killed. It wasn’t until her daughter came into Strawberry Patches months later to see if we could repair the machine that had endured that terrible crash, that we learned of the tragedy. The machine was so badly damaged that our technician could not repair it. Pam’s daughter, realizing what her mom’s Bernina meant to her, wanted the machine repaired in hopes that she too might someday discover the joy that that Bernina had given her mom. She even pointed out to me where Pam had written her name on the back of her Bernina. Well, we sent the machine off to Bernina of America along with a letter explaining the circumstances. The machine was returned last week totally repaired! Everything looked brand new except for the panel on the back of the machine where Pam’s name still remained! The bill attached to the work order simply stated, “no charge”. I just wanted to share this story with you all to let you know what a caring company Bernina of America is. Being a family owned company for more than one hundred years, I believe that they understand the emotion, the sense of heritage and the tradition that a sewing machine can evoke. Certainly the damage done by the accident wasn’t covered under warranty and it was through the caring and concern of this wonderful company that they repaired it at no charge. I am so proud to represent such a terrific company!

BERNINA GIVES BACK
Bernina of America, has a long history of commitment to its community.
Bernina donates a percentage of its artista sewing machine sales to Susan G. To date, Bernina and its authorized dealers have contributed more than $350,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation alone.
In 2002 Bernina of America expanded its charitable efforts to benefit the Children’s Relief Fund of the World Trade Center Miricles Foundation through a fundraising campaign. All proceeds from the sales of “United We Stand” embroidery design cards will be donated to this charity. Over 4,000 cards have been sold so far.

The question of copyrights
Many of you have asked if you can sell the designs that you have purchased for your embroidery machine. Here are some basic guide lines that hopefully will clarify copyright laws.
If the embroidery card is licensed, you have the right to:
1. Sew out the designs for your personal, non-commercial use. (This means you cannot sew the designs on items to be sold.)
2. Sew out the design on a gift.
3. Change the size and color of the design to your personal preference.
If the embroidery card is not licensed, you have additional rights to:
1. Sew out the designs on an item to be sold.
2. Edit and modify the designs in embroidery software to your personal preference.
These additional rights are not granted for licensed designs.
How do you know if a card is licensed or not licensed?
If a card is licensed, there will be a notice posted on the card stating: “Created under license with..” or a similar notice. You will find the artist’s name with the title of the card. On newer collections you may even see the word “Licenced” above the collection number.
Why should we observe the copyright laws? In order for companies such as Bernina to continue to secure licensed designs, they must assure licensees that their copyrights will be observed. If we fail to observe their copyright laws we will loose the use of their designs.
