Magical Mystery Quilters’ Retreat – February 20-22, 2004
Please join us for a Magical Weekend of quilting, eating, fun and friendship. We will be meeting at Rio Bravo Resort in the foothills outside Bakersfield at the edge of the Kern Canyon and Lake Ming.
The magic begins Friday afternoon/evening when you arrive, check in, and get aquainted with other quilters. Your registration fee includes two nights lodging at Rio Bravo Resort, dinner on Friday and Saturday, lunch Saturday, a light breakfast on Saturday and a breakfast buffet on Sunday. The fee also includes your pattern for a mystery quilt, and the fabric for the quilt top in your choice of color ways. When you’re not busy sewing, you can take advantage of the fitness center and tennis courts (or the pool for those who are brave enough to venture into it in February) or the golf course nearby. Sew to your heart’s content in this beautiful resort setting, away from the cooking, cleaning, and all those other distractions. All you have to bring is your sewing machine, some basic sewing supplies, and an unfinished project or two in case you finish your class mystery project early. We’ll have a late night shopping trip to Strawberry Patches with special discounts and goodie bags for everyone.
The registration fee for the weekend is $290 for single occupancy, $220 for double occupancy and $195 for triple occupancy. Space is limited. A non refundable deposit of $120 will hold your spot with the balance due by January 15. So add the date to your calendar, invite a friend and call Strawberry Patches to reserve your spot.

Bernina’s talented Education Consultant, Kerry Finn will conduct a “cooking class” with the help of head chef Suzanne and wait staff Annette, Becky and Cindy. Whenever my grandchildren come to Grammies house they always bring their blankies and teddy bears. There is something so comforting in having something soft and familiar to snuggle with when you find yourself in an unfamiliar bed. The children in the Alliance Against Family Violence shelter are temporarily homeless, often arriving with only the clothes on their backs. Strawberry Patches would like to extend a 20% discount on all fabric purchases during the week of November 10th in exchange for your tax deductable donation to these families in need. They would appreciate donations of any kind, but especially need:
1. cuddly soft stuffed animals, quilts and cozy blankets
2. towels and sheets
3. professional clothes for court appearances
4. children’s clothing and school uniforms
5. diapers
6. personal grooming items (shampoo, lotion, brushes, soap, etc)
7. new undergarments
8. items for food baskets
The Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault has been in operation in Bakersfield since 1979. They operate a 24 hour help line, a 36 bed safe house for women and children, have a response team that works with law enforcement, offers counseling services for battered women, group counseling for children, assist with court accompaniment, help their clients establish alternate living arrangements and also provide outreach services in outlying communities.

FIRST SATURDAY, $5.00 QUILT CLUB 2003 - Over 150 women join us each month to purchase or receive free, 450 quilt blocks! Here's how it works. Join us at 8:30am (the line starts forming about 7:00) on the 1st Saturday of each month for a brief, thirty minute demonstration on the construction of a 12" block. At the first, 1st Saturday that you attend, you will purchase a kit for $5.00. This kit includes a pattern and the fabric to complete a 12" block. Go home and make the block and bring it back to the following 1st Saturday demonstration. Bring September’s block to October’s 1st Saturday class and receive October’s pattern and fabric free! Bring October’s finished block to November’s class and receive November’s pattern and fabric free. Here are a few conditions: A second color choice will be available but only one kit will be free each month. If you choose to do a second color you must pay $5.00 for each additional kit. To get your free kit you must be at Strawberry Patches no later than 9:10am - the doors will be locked at 9:10 and no one will be admitted until 10:00am. We now run three classes of forty people each - 8:30, 9:15, & 10:00. If you cannot attend one Saturday, you may purchase that month's kit for $5.00 while supply lasts. You must attend to receive your free kit; you cannot send your finished block with a friend. We will have a drawing each month for a free door prize for those of you who do additional variations on the original block. This is an exciting time of sharing and learning! We hope to see you here! Skip cleaning the house! Next time hold your group’s sit and sew in our well-lit classrooms. With tables and chairs already set up, machine and hand sewing is a breeze. The classrooms are there for your convenience, including quilt basting and pinning. All we need is your reservation for the room! Availability will be based on class schedules and previous reservations, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
